As a mother of three children, ages 10, 7, and 5, I often talk with them about choices. We talk about how each choice you make has consequences and either positive or negative results. We talk about making good choices and how this will affect their desired outcome–what happens when they make a good choice? For my kids, the results of good choices often mean a great day at school. Now that summer is in full swing, we still talk about making other kinds of good choices too. We talk about getting enough sleep, eating healthy meals and snacks, drinking lots of water, and staying active during the summer months.
Since we are spending more time together since school is out for the summer, I find my kids reminding me to make good choices too, even though they may not realize it! They often ask me if we can go outside and play, if I can fill up their water bottles, if we can go for a bike ride or a walk together, if we can have apples and peanut butter for a snack, and if I can buy more grapes for them the next time I go to the grocery store, just to name a few. Don’t get me wrong, we do make our fair share of bad choices in our household, however, we have learned to make our choices one at a time. I want to be a role model and teach my children how to make their own choices, even if the results don’t always come out as they had hoped or planned. Then, we talk about the choice to make the situation better or the choice to move forward. Some choices are very hard, even for adults, especially the ones regarding food and exercise. There are some days when I wish I had made better choices. Then, there are some days when I really appreciate the choices I have made in regards to food and exercise, and I can see the positive results. Exercise and food is a lifelong decision in which choices have to be made every day.
For those of you with children in your lives, get them involved in making some good choices this summer. Get some exercise and have fun on a nature hike or at the swimming pool. Let them help you cook healthy meals in the kitchen. Have them help you make a healthy shopping list or weekly meal plan. Accept their challege of a race around the block. Let them help you take the dog for a walk. And remember, good choices can be FUN choices too!
