With the warmer weather of the past week, we know that summer is not very far away. With summer, comes baseball games, yard work, and in general, just more time spent outside in the sun and heat. Since over half of our body weight is made up of water, we must remember to stay hydrated in order for our bodies to function efficiently and maintain good health. If we don’t replace the water we lose while sweating, using the bathroom, or even breathing, we can become dehydrated.
How much water should we drink each day? The amount of water your body needs is different for each person. The recommended amount is 6 -8 eight ounce glasses of water each day, but remember, if you are exercising or trying to lose weight, you may need more than the recommended amount.
That’s a lot of water to drink! What else can we drink to help us stay hydrated? Fruit and vegetable juices, milk, and even teas can help us to stay hydrated. Just remember that some of these also add extra sugar and calories to our diet. Sports drinks can be helpful for those of you who exercise at a higher intensity for longer periods of time. Choose wisely though because many of these sports drinks are high in sugar and sodium, and one bottle may not just be one serving. Another option is Rehydrate by AdvoCare. With only 40 calories and 7 grams of sugar per serving, it has less calories and sugar than many other electrolyte drinks. It comes in three different flavors and in a powder form that you mix with water. It also comes in a single serving gel form for you runners out there.
While I want you to have a great summer and enjoy all of your fun outdoor activities, I want you to be safe and stay hydrated! If you have any questions or want to try Rehydrate, make sure to stop by the desk or contact me directly. Have a FUN summer, and I’ll see you at the Powershop Gym!
